First impression evaluation

Nicely done :-)

Having more default database drivers available (or have it automatically download from someplace like http://mirrors.ibiblio.org/maven2/) would be handy, and seem to have some issues with anything needing regexes on initial install, but otherwise I am pleasantly impressed!

Hi dhartford,

First of all - Thanks for your feedback!

We already provide some automatic driver install from ibiblio's maven2 repository. But if you know of more JDBC drivers that should be added, please let us know and we will add them swiftly! :)

In regards to the regexes, the strategy has been to use the online repository RegexSwap to serve the expressions. One thought that I got from your evaluation though is to prompt the user the first time he/she starts the application to ask him/her if datacleaner should automatically download all regexes from RegexSwap - what do you think?

omg - you guys actually did do the auto-download for the JDBC drivers, thank you!!! I harp on a lot of projects about that, and wrongly assumed this was the same scenario. I double checked though..and you hit it right on.

Regarding regexes, from a purely ignorant user, I think automatically downloading a 'core'/'pre-approved'/'default' set of regexes would be great and make sure to put something like 'recommended' when prompting the user.

Just an FYI, I'm evaluating a couple of open source data profiling tools and I'll put it up on my blog, some of these little diamonds are hard to find!

Hi,

Great - I'm very happy to hear that you like the driver-management facilities :-D

I've added issue ticket #287 to add an initial regex download option to the application.

Oh - and please share the blog entry once it's done! It's always really great to hear from people using the tool! Thanks for promoting it, we can definately use some more awareness around the net.
